When people think about ways to save money on their utility bills, they usually discuss subjects such as turning down heat or A/C down. Many people, however do not realize the difference new windows can make. With new windows, homeowners can sometimes save hundreds on heating bills. According to Focus on Energy, you could actually make heating and cooling your house up to 30% more efficient by installing new windows.

WHAT MAKES NEW WINDOWS MORE EFFICIENT?

Insulating Layers

New windows are designed for optimal insulation. If a window has more than one pane, the still air pocket in between acts as a thermal barrier. Many new windows today also are filled with a heavier gas in between the panes acting as a more efficient insulator becauser

Insulating Frames

Newer windows have sections in their frames that are insulated for better thermal protection. Vinyl frames are the most efficient types of windows.

Low-E Coating

This new technology is a coating put on the window that bounces some of the heat back into the house.

INTERPRETING THE EFFICIENCY OF A WINDOW

When you purchase a new window, the performance indicators are typically located on a label on your window. If you don't know where to find the values for your windows, call your window manufacturer.

U-factor

The U-factor measures the efficiency of the insulation of your windows. The lower the U-factor, the better insulated the window is. In order to qualify for the government tax incentives for windows, the U-factor must be below .30.

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, or SHGC, is the percentage of solar heat that is let in through a window. A lower number would mean less heat from sunlight is entering. The SHGC must also be below .30 in order to qualify for the tax incentive.

The most important factor for a new window is the installation. If a window is not properly installed, air will leak around the sides causing the most energy efficient window to perform like the worst window.
